Alex Cuba at the Myrna Loy

Alex Cuba’s sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks, and powerful guitar riffs relinquish a conventional stereotype that exemplifies much of the Latin music landscape. His records have earned him Latin Grammy and Juno awards, four Grammy Award nominations, and he took home the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.

His musical evolution for years was all about searching for the simplicity and soul in Cuban music – taking apart the complex arrangements, mixing it with North American influences, adopting the melodic simplicity of pop music, and looking to Cuban folk traditions for inspiration.

Nutcracker on the Rocks

Cohesion Dance Project celebrates 10 years of Shira Greenberg’s Nutcracker on the Rocks in Helena on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, 2024 at the Helena Civic Center. Featuring the music of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and more, this community based, rock-n-roll rendition of the holiday classic showcases a unique and energetic fusion of dancers and dance styles, along with a roaring Harley Davidson on stage! Leading audiences on a thrilling journey through the decades, Nutcracker on the Rocks artistically blends community dancers with professional visiting guest artists in creative partnerships and energetic collaborations, seamlessly weaving people of all ages and abilities, including those with disabilities, into the fabric of the choreography.

Nutcracker on the Rocks originated in Albuquerque, NM, and was performed there for 20 years. Helena now holds the prestigious honor of being the only location where this innovative production is staged.

The 2024 cast includes nearly 70 community dancers of all ages and abilities performing alongside professional visiting guest artists from across the country. Local lead dancers include Téa Woodland as the Rat Queen and Laura Brown as Marie. Visiting artists returning to the Helena stage are Missoula-based Rebecca White as Madame Drosselmeier and NYC-based Alex Ptelikapich who most recently graced the Grandstreet stage this summer as Race in Newsies!

A growing Christmas tree and lots of beautiful snow… there’s nothing more magical than Queen City Ballet’s 23rd annual professional production of The Nutcracker. This traditional version is award-winning for storytelling and captivating for audiences of all ages. This years’ performance will highlight Guest artists from Diablo Ballet and professional Queen City Ballet Alumni with a cast of over 92 dancers. Don’t miss this classical production set to the magnificent score by Tchaikovsky.
